Re: What kinds of flash drives are available?
Flash drives actually come in two different types. The most common is the USB flash drive while the other is called a solid state drive. These flash drives are rather different and will be used at different times for different things.
What are the flash drives and what is so different about them? The USB flash drive and solid state drive are the two types. A USB flash drive will be much smaller in physical size than a solid state drive. Of course it should be noted that the solid state drive can be used to replace a disk hard drive while a USB one cannot.
Using a computer's USB port is how a USB flash drive is connected to the computer. This type of port is present on all newer computer and only older ones will not have one. USB drives are small in size and as such can easily be carried around in a pocket. It is also possible to get them in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are some that are part of a working pen while others are novelty shaped.
Owning and using a USB flash drive will have many disadvantages and advantages. Some of the advantages will be the fact that dust and scratches will not affect their performance; it is easy to move them as they are small and they will offer higher capacity than other small devices. Some of the disadvantages will be that they are so small that they can get lost easily, they may cost more than things such as external hard drives and they do not have write-protection mechanisms.
The solid state drive is also a data storage device. It is larger than a USB drive. It is possible to use this drive instead of a normal hard disk drive. These drives will not need power external power when they are being used and will retain information even if there is a sudden power out.
There are many advantages to using these drives instead of hard disk drives. These advantages will include a faster start up time, no noise due to no moving parts, ideal for laptops due to durability and mechanical failure less likely because there are no moving parts. The disadvantages would include a limited lifespan, more expensive than disk hard drives, a lower capacity and they can have slower write times.
Flash drives are available in two different forms. The one is the USB drive which is small and very popular with the other being the solid state drive.
